Ayam Penyet Ria (not to be confused with Ayam Penyet President), famous for their Indonesian style smashed fried chicken has been confirmed to be not halal-certified.

This comes after a tweet from Twitter user Healtii, who asked the official Twitter account of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) on the Halal status of the establishment's outlet at Lucky Plaza.

According to Healtii's tweet, the outlet manager was unable to produce the Halal certificate of the restaurant.

MUIS responds

MUIS then responded with the following:

Das because they don't have any. Ayam Penyet Ria is currently not Halal-certified, and we are not processing any Halal application. We be sending #AbangHalal for that masyaAllah bersarnya Halal logo.

This comes as a surprise for many of the restaurant's patrons.

After all, the halal logo is displayed prominently at their outlets and on their website:

Possible Offence

According to MUIS and the Singapore Statutes, under the Administration of Muslim Law Act (AMLA), MUIS is vested with the sole legal powers to issue Halal certificates in Singapore.

According to the statutes, under Section 88A(5) of the AMLA:

(5) Any person who, without the approval of the Majlis —

(a) issues a halal certificate in relation to any product, service or activity; or

(b) uses any specified halal certification mark or any colourable imitation thereof,

shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both.

In any case, remember that eating establishments that are certified need to display their certificates prominently.
