8 reasons why 8 Days will continue to live in our hearts

So long, and thanks for all the tea.

Earlier on in April this year, it was announced that 8 DAYS -- our source of weekly print entertainment in the pre-internet days -- will stop sales of physical copies by end September to go fully digital.

And the time has come.

On September 27, 2018, the magazine released its final physical copy on the stands.

Its cover featured eight megawatt stars: Zoe Tay, Fann Wong, Christopher Lee, Ann Kok, Fiona Xie, Elvin Ng, Jacelyn Tay, and Rebecca Lim.

These are faces who have sold innumerable copies of the magazine over its past 28 years -- Tay at the top with 66 covers.

And if it looks familiar, it's because it mirrors the quality of those Vanity Fair (a US "culture" magazine) features done by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz:

Here is an extract of their final print editor's note:

"There are 7 days to work on 8 DAYS.

To the mercurial gods of showbiz news, we have said a few silent prayers over the years.

Please don't let someone famous die on a Thursday.

Please don't break up on a Friday.

Or call it quits on Friday but keep a lid on it until maybe Monday. Amen.

Because for much of its almost three-decade history, 8 DAYS magazine is sent to the printers every Thursday night (Star Awards week and the CNY hols being among the exceptions)...

[...]

After this final issue, we go fully digital, henceforth unfettered by the rhythms of a weekly production cycle. So long, dearly departed deadline day.

Thank you for flipping our pages for the past 28 years through 1,458 issues..."

Here are 8 reasons why 8 DAYS will continue to live in our hearts:

1. This writer wanted to write for 8 DAYS when she was younger. To be fair, there was not much else she could do, since she was terrible at math and science. But back then, 8 DAYS was regarded as the pinnacle of literary entertainment.

2. This same writer once read a paragraph on the magazine that she will never forget. It was a description likening the Backstreet Boys to a packet of M&Ms: Appetizingly different on the outside, same brown sh*t on the inside.

3. This is mostly a practical reason, really: Because it's still online (for free some more). And we live off the internet.

4. It's full of substance. Not ads. Substance.

5. Jason Hahn's column about his flatmates, Saffy and Amanda (bells -- and not the alarm kind -- are going off in your head, huh).  There's a blog here, by the way.

6. One doesn't feel guilty after reading 8 DAYS. Not in the same way you'd feel after reading a women's magazine report on cheating husbands or tips for your sex life, anyway.

7. Their audacious covers over the years (which we were reminded of in this issue):

8. Topped only by these two issues:
