The Singapore Police Force has responded to the video showing a man launching an expletive-laden racist tirade at a foreigner.

The incident, which appeared to have been unprovoked, involved a middle-aged man caught on video telling a foreigner to get out of a shared public space.

The foreigner was at that time sharing the lift with the middle-aged man at Changi Airport.

The middle-aged man hurling the abuse is likely a local Singaporean.

Swift public opprobrium

The video, which has been widely shared on various Facebook pages, has received widespread public opprobrium.

Random members of the Singaporean public have apologised to the foreigner for his unsavoury experience.

The video was first posted to the SPF Facebook page on Friday, Aug. 3, at 1.18am.

It appeared to be a call for help for the authorities to step in.

The video was accompanied by a message that read:

Hi everyone good morning

I am here Changi Airport this person bad talking about Indian

I just take lift only but he doing wrong and bad talking I want know why he doing like that

The video eventually showed the middle-aged man leaving the lift, after another person stepped in to find out what the commotion was about.

Police response

In response, the police has urged the victim of the verbal abuse to lodge a formal police report.

In such situations, the authorities can charge the man for being a public nuisance under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act. It carries a fine of up to S$1,000.
