JJ Lin ticket scammer attempts to con buyer of S$700 with high-pressure harassment

The scammer would mail the "tickets" to the victims, then harass them repeatedly before the mail arrived in order to get them to pay up first.

Someone has been running a scam out of the sale of tickets for JJ Lin's upcoming concerts on Aug 15, 16, 18 and 19.

On July 30, Facebook user Christine Xtine put up a post sharing her experience almost buying two tickets from a scammer. The scammer claims she was selling her tickets because it was "too painful" to attend JJ Lin's concert without her boyfriend who had just left her.

This eventually turned out to be the start of a rather dramatic attempt by the scammer to scam Christine of S$700.

Refusing to meet in person

Initially, the exchange started out innocently enough.

Christine tells the would-be scammer that she can meet in person to pay. The scammer refuses to do so on the grounds that it makes her "gaowei" (feel awkward/iffy).

However, the scammer also tells Christine that she can pay when she receives the tickets. The scammer agrees to Christine's proposed mode of payment and even sends Christine an image of the ticket. Nothing feels too out of the ordinary yet.

Scammer sets up the stage for harassment

In all, the total price of the two tickets that Christine eventually agreed to purchase them at came up to S$700, with the entire sale even framed by Christine as a friendly gesture to help fund the other party's "trip" to Taiwan.

However, the scammer then decides to deliver the tickets via mail to Christine without both parties agreeing on the exact moment payment should be processed. Photo of the tracking number and receipt are sent over, supposedly as "proof" that the tickets are on their way.

In any case, it would appear that all of this was meant to set up the next phase of the scam -- repeatedly harassing the victim into paying up before the mail even arrived.

Drama starts with scammer disregarding earlier conversation

At this point, the exchange takes a sharp turn for the ugly with the scammer suddenly flying into a rage at Christine and accusing her of supposedly being unfair for not paying her before the mail arrives.

She also lashes out at Christine for backing out from her promise of paynowing her twice, effectively making a 180-degree change from what she actually suggested at the beginning.

The scammer further issues a deadline of 4.15pm for payment with a warning and threat to find her home address.

4.15pm comes and goes and Christine gives a rational but firm response towards the scammer's histronics.

Christine questions why she is so fearful that she won't pay since she is not travelling to Taiwan tomorrow and says that if she really wants to, she is open to meeting her to clarify her stance that she will pay her as soon as she has received the tickets.

She also points out that she actually suggested to meet in person three times with the other party, only for the other party to raise discomfort and make the decision to send the tickets by mail without even waiting for her agreement.

Christine also requests for the "seller" to confirm that the number she is using to Whatsapp her is also the same number to Paynow her for the tickets, along with a stern warning that intimidation will not help matters.

None of this deters the scammer from continuing her harassment of Christine in attempting to make Christine anxious enough to make the payment.

Fortunately, Christine was stopped from giving in to the aggressive tactics by her friends.

Mail turns out to be a dud

Eventually, the mail arrives, with a blank piece of paper instead of the tickets.

Confirming that the attempt was indeed a scam.

Not that it stopped the scammer from messaging her one last time for a final attempt at sneering over their exchange.

Not the first time this has happened

Unfortunately, Christine's experience is not unique. And others have not been as fortunate in avoiding falling for the scam like her.

According to two other people who messaged Christine about their experiences, they were successfully scammed of S$704 and S$585 by the same person through similar tactics.

Christine has since confirmed that she has lodged a police report against the scammer and that an investigation has been launched into the matter since there have been multiple reports from different sources about the same person.

The perpetrator has also become uncontactable through her mobile and has deleted her Facebook profile.
