Huawei's gamble on the triple camera, and overall focus on smartphone camera quality seems to have paid off handsomely.

According to market research firms IDC, Canalys and Strategy Analytics, Huawei has overtaken Apple to become the world's second largest smartphone vendor.

The report is based on the number of devices shipped in the second quarter of 2018.

According to the report, Huawei delivered 54.2 million units for the quarter, over 10 million more than Apple's 41.3 million.

Research firm Canalys reported that the strong performance was driven by strong sales from Huawei's latest flagship, the P20 series.

Here's the P20 Pro for reference.

Strong growth

Huawei's rise is made even more impressive by the fact that Apple didn't actually take a dip in market share.

In fact, Apple's 12.1 percent market share was up from the year-ago quarter of 11.8 percent.

It was just Huawei having an exponentially better growth, going from 11 percent last year, to their current 15.8 percent marketshare.

Noice.

Singapore

The world's second largest smartphone vendor have their eyes set on Singapore as well.

Cheng Jiangfei, Managing Director of Huawei Singapore Consumer Business Group, had this to say.

“Singapore is an important market for Huawei and we will be centring our efforts on meeting customer needs and creating value with meaningful technologies,”

The importance of Singapore as a market for Huawei would have only increased with their recent successful Huawei nova 3i launch.
