21-year-old man at SIM arrested for alleged peeping tom activity, & not for the first time

On Saturday, July 21, a Facebook user put up a post warning female students at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) about how she caught a guy spying on her while she was in the toilet:

"A phone over the edge"

In her post, she recounted that while she was in the cubicle, she "felt something above and when (she) turned to look, (she) saw a phone over the edge".

She "immediately left the cubicle and pretended that [she] had left the toilet" to presumably draw out the perpetrator and catch him.

She also alerted her friend to come over to the toilet immediately.

Confrontation

In the moments that followed, she wrote that the culprit "took a while to come out and pretended to flush the toilet twice".

When he finally emerged, the woman and her friend immediately asked him what he was doing in the female toilet.

His response was that he had a stomachache and had gone into the wrong toilet accidentally. The woman adds that he "was denying it till we decided to call the police".

When further pressed by the two of them on where his class was, his reply was "level two" — a "good attempt to lie", she notes, since they were at level four, thereby raising the question of "how did he accidentally go into the female toilet at level 4 while having a stomachache with his class being at level 2?"

Not his first time

Towards the end of her post, the woman said she was told by police that this wasn't the young man's first time being caught for being a peeping Tom.

Mothership has independently verified that this detail is true.

A police spokesperson has separately confirmed in a statement shared with Mothership that the man has been arrested and faces charges of insult of modesty and criminal trespass:

"On 21 July 2018 at 10.58am, the Police were alerted to a case of insulting of modesty at 461 Clementi Road. A 21-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case. Police investigations are ongoing."

He will be charged in court on Monday, July 23.

Faces up to year's jail and fine

Here's what the law has to say under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting a woman's modesty:

"Whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both."

Criminal trespass is laid out under Section 447 as punishable with a prison term of up to three months, a fine of up to S$1,500 or both.
