Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was charged in court on Wednesday, July 4.
4 charges so far
The 64-year-old was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of using his position for gratification.
The charges are in connection with misappropriation of funds from SRC International, a unit formerly under 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad), the state fund he founded.
Najib pleaded not guilty to the charges that were read out in court.
Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' jail.
What are the charges?
1. First count: Accused of committing criminal breach of trust involving RM27 million (S$9.1 million) while Najib was a prime minister, finance minister and advisor emeritus for SRC International.
Offence supposedly occurred at AmIslamic Bank at Jalan Raja Chulan between Dec. 24 and Dec. 29, 2014.
2. Second count: Accused of committing criminal breach of trust over SRC International funds totalling RM5 million (S$1.68 million) while he was a prime minister and finance minister.
Offence was also committed at AmIslamic Bank, between Dec. 24 and Dec. 29, 2014.
3. Third count: Accused of committing criminal breach of trust involving RM10 million (S$3.37 million) between Feb. 10 and March 2, 2015, at the same place.
4. Fourth count: Accused of using position as prime minister and finance minister of Malaysia to commit bribery involving RM42 million.
This occurred when he was involved in a decision on behalf of the government to provide government guarantees for loans from the Retirement Fund Incorporated Fund to SRC International amounting to RM4 billion (S$1.35 billion).
He is accused of committing the offence at the prime minister's office in Putrajaya from Aug. 17, 2011, to Feb. 8, 2012.
Facing 20 years jail
If convicted, Najib faces a maximum of 20 years' jail.
The minimum fine he faces is five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
The total amount allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB is many times the magnitude of the amount involved in the charges Najib currently faces.
The US Department of Justice has said more than US$4.5 billion was siphoned from the fund.
