What would you do if you were the passenger?

Horror stories abound about passengers as documented by private-hire drivers:

This following story, however, is a horror story waiting to happen, coming from a Grab passenger.

Grab driver allegedly used phone throughout entire trip

On Monday, July 2, one Zhiyang Ray shared a Facebook post about his experience with a Grab driver who happened to be at the wheel of a manual car.

For the uninitiated, this means that the driver has to shift gears to get the car going, and this, as one would expect, would require the driver's fullest attention and two hands -- somewhat more advanced than driving an automatic transmission car.

However, the driver apparently propped his smartphone on his lap and used it throughout the entire trip.

Ray also uploaded a video of the driver using his phone while driving, and it seems that it happened to be raining too:

Grab driver doesn't drive Grab for a living

Concerned for his safety, Ray advised the driver to not use his phone by saying:

"Bro, try not to use your phone when you are driving. Is very dangerous and you may get terminated by Grab."

Unfazed, the driver responded that it's okay because he doesn't "do it for a living".

Almost reported to Grab

Upon hearing the driver's reply, Ray said that it "pissed" him off and felt the urge to report him to Grab and the traffic police.

However, he didn't and decided to publish a Facebook post in hopes of the driver seeing it and heeding his advice.

"Bro, I hope you see this post. I will not report you to grab. Maybe you also don't care cos you said you don't do this for a living. But please be responsible enough when you are on the road. How will you feel if your family members sit in a car like this."

Report or no report?

The post which now has over 100 shares received varied reactions.

A lot of responses were angry by the driver's actions.

However, many were wondering why Ray didn't report the case to Grab or other relevant authorities anyway.

Driver can be fined S$1,000

In Ray's post, he also mentioned that one will get their license revoked if they were found using their phone while driving.

But this isn't entirely true.

According to the Road Traffic Act, if a driver is found using a mobile communication device while driving, they can be convicted to a fine not exceeding S$1,000 or an imprisonment term not exceeding 12 months or both.
