A Grab driver in Singapore embarked on a personal challenge: To #Earn1kOnSunday and he almost succeeded.

The driver, who goes by the name Muhammad Faizal, earned S$968 from driving for 15 hours.

If you can't see the text above, here's what he wrote:

Like i said before, consistency is the best policy! For the past few weeks, i've been hitting $500 on Sunday. One day, i will hit that $1000 fare! Gonna give my best when i'm ready! ?

*I'm not posting this for personal gain bcoz recently alot of friends and people i know are being negative about being a Private Hired Driver. Some are even ashamed of being one!

The key to be a top earner are quite simple.

1) Be Discipline

2) Making the right decision

3) Consistent & Persistant

4) Proper planning/ Scheduling

5) Stay Positive

I hope #earn1konsunday was a success and motivated all the drivers. #driveincome

Here's a video he posted, where he clarified that he drive for 15 hours to earn that amount:

Many people expressed scepticism about Faizal's earnings online:

Sudden drop in number of PHV drivers on July 1

Faizal's sudden windfall was an anomaly.

June 30 was the last day for private hire vehicle drivers to pass their private hire driver test and get their licence.

As late as June 25, there were still 23,000 drivers who were still holding on to their temporary one-year concession licence.

On July 1, there would have been a large volume of drivers who were taken off the PHV ride-hailing operators' systems, resulting in a sudden drop in supply of drivers, hence, increase in fares and surge pricing for riders.

And this was what some riders experienced.

Drivers have reported having more jobs, increased earnings, and in some cases, back-to-back bookings:

On July 1, this driver saw a spike in earnings. Via Facebook.

This driver received "non-stop" bookings:

This driver managed to earn S$40 for one trip:

This surge in fares is expected to normalise soon, as more drivers get their PHV licences, and hence increase the supply of drivers on the road.

But for now, PHV drivers can enjoy the higher earnings.
