S'pore church publicises faith healing on Facebook with limited context, sceptics chime in

Church acknowledges scepticism.

It is not everyday that regular Singaporeans get to witness what goes on in a religious organisation.

And when they do encounter religious practices on a platform such as Facebook, there can be some tension as "tolerance" and "social media" do not go hand in hand.

Faith healing

Grace Assembly of God Singapore is a church located in Tanglin.

On June 27, it uploaded a video onto the church's Facebook page showing the process of faith healing in action.

The post was meant to publicise the faith healing sessions the church conducts that is open to the public, where those with infirmities go to seek help.

According to the post, people were being healed at every single session.

The above video purportedly being an example of that healing.

Here's a quick breakdown of that video, which was well-shard, if you are unable to load it for some reason.

A man walks in with a noticeable limp

A prayer is said for him

Which leads to big improvement

Just how big an improvement?

You can see the improvement here.

That's a high step.

Scepticism

Although the comments seem to have been deleted or hidden, Facebook users found ways to get their scepticism across.

A scepticism that the church themselves acknowledged in response to the comments.

Hi everyone. Seems like many have their concerns. Thought that we could speak up on behalf of our team here at the Healing Room Ministry. It is not our intention to anger anyone or stir up any negative emotions.

We do not encourage people to avoid doctors. Actually at every session we encourage the people to get verified by their doctors and specialists if they feel that they are healed that evening -- especially so for major illnesses that cannot be seen by the naked eye. In fact, most of the folks who come (or were brought) to our meetings come here as a last resort after visiting doctors and going through other forms of treatment.

Do people get healed? Yes. Does everyone get healed? No. Do we know those individuals who come? Not always. The sessions were never rehearsed and we do not collect offerings at our sessions. Sometimes the sessions were even run completely by church volunteers, and these volunteers are church members who are giving and tithing to the church.

We just want to be a service to the community -- we just want people healed. We may not be doctors, but we can pray. The interesting thing is that we witness people getting healed - verified all and such..

Our pastors and volunteers are all humans just like everyone else. Some of us praying for the sick are also going through some form of illness. Why does God heal some and not the others? Why does God heal those who come but not our volunteers? We seriously do not know! We do not have all the answers. But what we know is that some are healed, and this is better than none at all. This is enough for us to thank God for.

We invite you to join our sessions, and when you come it would be great if you can bring along someone who is physically unwell. Thank you!

There you go.
