In yet another case that has shocked the world again, 17 men in India have been accused of repeatedly raping a 11-year-old hearing-impaired girl over the course of seven months.

The incident took place in Chennai and only came to light after the girl told her visiting older sister about the abuse.

The men were arrested on charges of rape, attempted murder and criminal intimidation.

The accused men included security guards, plumbers, and lift operators working at the apartment block where the girl lived.

Sedated and assaulted

The men had taken the girl into vacated apartments in the building where she was often sedated and assaulted.

The men, whose ages range from 23 to 66, also threatened the girl with knives and threats of releasing video footage of her being assaulted.

The case is generating intense anger in India, especially from the city's lawyers.

According to The Khaleej Times, a daily newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) has said no lawyers will represent the accused, and sought strong punishment for the 17 men.

This anger allegedly lead to a group of lawyers assaulting the 17 men after they appeared in court in the south Indian city of Chennai.
