The Trump-Kim Summit has been described by some as a "branding opportunity" for Singapore.

Perhaps, therefore, the need to put our best, and perhaps brightest, foot forward, because an opportunity to showcase the Singapore brand would certainly go to waste if our audience around the world sees a Marina Bay area that isn't as brightly lit as it should be.

This could perhaps explain the rather bewildering message below.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is alleged to have requested the management staff of several buildings in the Marina Bay area to keep their lights on between 7pm and 6am, from June 10 to June 13.

Keeping the lights on throughout these nights, according to the message, will showcase the "brilliance of our city skyline" to "millions of international viewers" abroad.

Multiple international media outlets will be working from the International Media Centre at the F1 Pit Building, which is also situated within the Bay. They are expected to broadcast their summit coverage live to an international audience, hence this request.

But to be fair, this isn't out of the ordinary.

During other high profile international events such as the F1 Night Race, tenants around the race track are also requested to keep their lights on during the races.

While it is hard to reconcile this with the government's push for the country to exercise prudence and green-living, at least we'll look good for the world for the next three days or so.
