United States president Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un could extend their June 12 meeting to the next day -- if both parties hit it off or want to extend the conversation.

Contingency plan for second day

According to CNN, US officials have laid the groundwork for both leaders to hold a second day of meetings in Singapore.

The contingency plan includes setting aside meeting spaces for a second day of discussions in case there is an extension beyond the single day of meetings.

The US president is expected to leave on Wednesday following the meeting on Tuesday.

It's not clear if Trump is eager for a two-day summit with Kim, but he has expressed a desire for flexibility in the negotiations and plans to follow his gut instincts as he negotiates with the North Korean leader, he reportedly told aides and allies.

Downplaying expectations

US officials are working to downplay expectations about what can be accomplished during Trump and Kim's first meeting.

The US has stressed that it is seeking full and verifiable denuclearisation of North Korea. Questions remain about whether Kim is truly committed to achieving that aim.

Trump last week made clear the meeting would be the beginning of a dialogue with North Korea and that it was unlikely he would achieve all his objectives in a first meeting.

"I think it's a 'getting to know you' meeting plus, and that could be a very positive thing," Trump said.

Playing golf

The Daily Beast has also reported that Trump might play golf with Kim, according to sources.

The site of the upcoming Singapore talks at Capella, a five-star hotel on Sentosa Island, is located near multiple golf courses.

However, the president has been told by some advisers that playing golf with Kim could run the risk of creating horrific “optics.”

Kim is known more as a basketball fan, though.
