S'porean girl discovers YouTube user secretly following & recording videos of women in Jurong

There were more than 20 videos on just 'beautiful women' in Pioneer.

It is unfortunate to say that sexual harassment in Singapore is not as rare as one might hope.

Despite acknowledging this unfortunate reality, though, many would still certainly be surprised to find perverted, stalker-like videos on a platform as accessible — or as easily searchable — as YouTube.

Peculiar recommended video

On June 12, one Hayley Tan uploaded a Facebook post to warn girls who live in the western side of Singapore about a disturbing find on YouTube.

Speaking to Mothership on Wednesday, Tan said she was watching a video that about the naked lady who was arrested at Pioneer MRT station when she saw a peculiarly-titled video, "Pioneer MRT Beautiful Girl (26)", recommended on the sidebar.

Curiosity piqued, she said she clicked on the video and saw shaky phone-recorded footage of a woman being followed, the woman seeming to be unaware of the cameraman's actions.

Series of clips filmed in Tuas & Pioneer

Finding the whole experience weird, she clicked on the account of the YouTube uploader, who had the username "Ted Ted", and found an entire series of videos of "Beautiful Girl"s in various western parts of Singapore that include Tuas, Pioneer and Joo Koon.

She said:

"There seems to be one girl the YouTube poster was particularly interested in as she appeared in a couple of videos with different outfits but with the same backpack."

Almost 50 videos of women filmed without their knowledge

All in all, Tan said, she counted more than 80 videos in "Ted Ted"'s account — to be fair, though, they started off with fairly innocent clips that includes a series titled "Busy Street on Jurong West".

It was only in recent months when suspiciously-taken videos of girls being followed or just minding their own business were uploaded by "Ted Ted", with the most recent video, she says, uploaded as recently as on June 10:

"I would say about a good 40-50 (of the videos on his channel) are of girls that seemed unaware that they are being filmed."

Account suspended for violating YouTube's policies

Since Tan's Facebook post went viral with over 900 shares, "Ted Ted"'s account appears to have been terminated by YouTube after it was found to be in violation of YouTube's policy on nudity or sexual content.

We aren't sure if that's the sole outlet for Ted Ted's videos, though — it's entirely possible that the same material has been uploaded to more inconspicuous websites like Tumblr.

By the way, the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) requires any photographer or videographer to seek consent before collecting, using or disclosing a person's picture/video.

Any person found guilty of an offence under this act can be fined not exceeding S$10,000, imprisoned for a term not exceeding three years, or both.
