Marina Bay Sands & infinity pool deemed "cliche" & "low-hanging insta fruit" for tourists

Tourist trap or tourist destination?

In December last year, INSIDER Travel touted Singapore as the number one destination of 2018:

If you didn't catch the video, it recommended a rather narrow, pricey and touristy list of places to check out, including Gardens by the Bay, the kinetic sculpture in Changi Airport, and of course, Marina Bay Sands.

A bunch of locals and tourists disagreed, by the way.

Singapore "quite fantastic"

More recently on June 18, a tourist praised Singapore for being "fantastic" on forum site Reddit's r/Singapore thread.

The post was accompanied by a photo of Marina Bay Sands' (MBS) infinity pool, overlooking the Singapore skyline.

Others chimed in with their positive experiences at the iconic hotel:

All about the MBS

While a number of forum users agreed that Singapore is a great place to visit, others pointed out the disproportionate focus on MBS when it comes to exploring the country:

In fact, one even left a snarky comment with regard to MBS's Skypark:

Tourists just want a photo?

Nonetheless, there were also visitors whose discussions revolved around the hotel and its infinity pool:

The photo alone even convinced a couple of tourists to decide to visit us:

And although one Redditor advised tourists to stay elsewhere, they also provided a handy tip for getting that Instagram photo:

There's more to Singapore than MBS

While having an international icon to draw tourists isn't a bad thing, many have pointed out that there is more to Singapore than MBS:

Other Redditors provided a list of places to check out, which we've compiled after these screenshots:

Here's the list of their suggestions:

  • Little India's food and Mustafa Centre
  • Tiong Bahru's Hipster Cafes
  • Toa Payoh — the "old town" of Singapore
  • Geylang's frog leg porridge
  • Pulau Ubin
  • Changi Village for Nasi Lemak and Hor Fun
  • Katong for Peranakan vibes and more food
  • Haji Lane for hipster stores and pubs
  • Beach Road Scissor Cut Hainanese curry rice
  • Chinatown for Michelin star soya sauce chicken rice and noodles
  • Lavender for coffee at Tolidos Espresso Nook
  • Bendemeer for hipster coffee at Chye Seng Huat Hardware
  • Chinese Druggists Association for Craft beer, also at Bendemeer
  • Haw Par Villa
  • Southern Ridge

But of course, the view at MBS is still great. You just have to decide if it's worth the price.
