In 2006, then United States President George W. Bush visited Singapore on Nov. 16 to 17.
That was his second official visit here. The first was in 2003.
Singapore visit
Bush met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other Cabinet ministers during his visit here.
The US president visited the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he delivered a speech at the University Cultural Centre.

Following the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, many were outraged by the foreign policy pursued under the Bush administration.
And in disapproval, at least one person publicly protested against Bush in NUS.
Solo protester
The solo protester was a Caucasian woman, who was believed to be a student. She held up a black umbrella with the words "Bush is a war criminal" scrawled in white paint.
She was captured on video by a fellow student, where she was seen waving the umbrella at Bush's motorcade as the vehicles drove past.

She also held up the umbrella to police cameras in defiance, as onlookers cheered.

According to eyewitness accounts, she was subsequently questioned by security staff and had her particulars taken down.

The security staff and/ or police also tried to confiscate the umbrella as it was "drawing a crowd", according to a separate eyewitness account.
Her participation in a protest was an eye-opener for Singaporeans not used displays of dissatisfaction publicly.
Organised heckling session
According to another blog post from that time, some students in NUS also supposedly started a Facebook group to organise a heckling session against Bush's presence on campus.
"Name: Bush Heckling
Tagline: Because he’s here, and we’re not allowed to!
Type: Causes – Protest
Time and Place
Date: Thursday, November 16, 2006
Time: 2:30pm – 8:00pm
Venue: University Cultural Center (Yusof Ishak House is probably the closest we can get)
Description
Bush is giving a speech at NUS on Thursday at the UCC and I dont particularly want him here...and I’m sure neither do you.
Come join the fun as we try to avoid getting arrested by the Singapore Police for protesting, shot by the Secret Service for insulting “the man” and expelled for breaking some school rule that probably prohibits gatherings of more than 1.5 people for anything other than accademic reasons."
It is unclear how many actually turned up for this event.

However, one estimate said there were about 50 to 100 people when Bush arrived. About 20 of them remain when he left.
Some of those present also got asked if they were with an organisation.
