SMRT trains chief operations officer Alvin Kek Yoke Boon was sentenced on June 25, 2018 to two weeks' jail and fined S$4,000 for drink-driving.
He is also disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for three years after his release.
What all media reports are saying
According to various English mainstream media reports:
- This was Kek's second drink-driving offence. He was first convicted of drink-driving on March 11, 2004, and was then fined S$2,800 and disqualified from driving for two years.
- According to court documents, Kek, 51, was drinking with his colleagues at the Temasek Club at Rifle Range Road at about 11pm on April 20.
- He was said to have consumed four mugs of Tiger beer as he needed to "distress" after the recent death of his father.
- He had intended to drive towards the direction of Woodlands after parting with his colleagues that night, but instead entered the Woodlands Checkpoint.
- According to a SMRT spokesperson, Kek has been suspended from work but gave no details on the length of the suspension, or whether Kek will be allowed to keep his job after serving his jail sentence.
Chinese press
However, Shin Min Daily News included additional information.
The words in the starburst on the front page read: "Ferrying a female passenger while drink-driving. Entered Woodlands Checkpoint by accident."
In its Facebook post, the Chinese paper also noted that he drank four mugs of beer in four hours.
Female passenger previously reported
In its previous reports, SMDN found some interesting information by going on the ground besides regurgitating the pertinent facts.
This was what SMDN found as reported on April 22, 2018:
• Kek was not alone when he got arrested. There was a female passenger in her 30s who was with him.
• SMDN understands that the female passenger is from China and she's currently working in Singapore.
• They both didn't have their passports with them.
• SMDN wrote that it was believed he was driving home but didn't know how he ended up at the checkpoint as he didn't have the intention to visit Malaysia.
• Kek is out on bail.

• He deleted his social media accounts on Saturday night, a day after the arrest.
• SMDN even went to stake out at Kek's residence and saw two boys and a woman in her 40s, who is believed to be Kek's wife.
• Before this incident, Kek had actually delivered a talk at an SMRT safety event.
• He spoke about how accountability and teamwork can ensure safety.
• Speaking to Kek's peers, SMDN quoted a colleague who said Kek is very responsible and will solve any problem even when he is holidaying.
