Hong Kong’s English newspaper of record, South China Morning Post, has been called out by readers for altering an article title about Singapore's confirmation as host country for the Trump-Kim summit.

SCMP ran an Agence France-Presse wire story, but amended it's headline, "Why Singapore for Trump-Kim summit?", by adding "It's boring" to it:

Original:

The original headline is: Why Singapore for Trump-Kim summit?

The SCMP altered headline:

It read: Why Singapore for Trump-Kim summit? It’s boring

Readers took notice of this embellishment and responded on SCMP's Facebook post:

Changed headline

SCMP subsequently altered the headline.

It qualified that "boring" is a good thing, inserting the observation that the two leaders -- United States President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong-un -- are unpredictable:

Amended "dull" to "boring"

But the headline wasn't the only portion of the article amended.

In the original AFP story, the word "dull" was used:

It has one foot in the East and one in the West, is ultra-modern, secure and sometimes mocked as being a little dull -- Singapore was the safe pick for a historic first meeting between the unpredictable leaders of the US and North Korea.

It appears SCMP took the liberty of changing it to "boring".

It has one foot in the East and one in the West, is ultra-modern, secure and sometimes mocked as being a little boring – Singapore was the safe pick for a historic first meeting between the unpredictable leaders of the US and North Korea.

The original AFP article did not even mention "boring" once.

However, Singapore was indeed called one of the least exciting cities in February 2018.
