Although he has never represented Langkawi in Parliament, residents there credit Mahathir's tenure as Prime Minister for accelerating the development of the island.

Oldest MP

According to The New Straits Times, Mahathir, 92, is the oldest candidate participating in the GE.

This means that he will return to parliament as the oldest MP, 14 years after he retired from politics.

Langkawi likely to be in opposition hands for the first time

BN has never lost the seat of Langkawi, since the seat was formed in 1994.

Meanwhile, his main opponent, Prime Minister Najib Razak, retained his own seat of Pekan in the state of Pahang.

In other words, the leaders of both coalitions will hold seats in Malaysia's next Parliament.
