Trump prefers meeting Kim at Demilitarised Zone in between Koreas instead of S'pore

A third-party location such as Singapore is not symbolic enough.

According to CNN, South Korean President Moon Jae-in has convinced North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to hold his upcoming meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the demilitarised zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

That is the same location Moon and Kim met on April 27, 2018.

The Peace House is in Panmunjom, the village in the DMZ where the 1953 armistice that halted the Korean War was signed.

Trump also publicly leaning towards DMZ

Trump said on Monday, April 30, he was confident his landmark summit Kim will go ahead.

At a joint press conference with his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari, he also talked up the idea of holding it in the Demilitarised Zone between the two Koreas.

Trump confirmed that Singapore was under consideration as a location, but said the DMZ should be given strong consideration, following on from a morning tweet.

Trump said: "There's something I like about it because you're there. If things work out, there's a great celebration to be had on the site, not in a third-party country."

"We're also looking at other countries including Singapore," he added. "Everybody wants us -- it has the chance to be a big event."

Other potential locations reportedly include Mongolia.

CNN said Trump likes the DMZ location because media facilities and equipment are already in place, which could the allow the summit to take place "in late May."

No confirmation

On Saturday, April 28, speaking at a press conference at the close of the 32nd ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore had no formal invitations or requests from any of the parties.

PM Lee said: "It has to be something agreed by both North Korea as well as the United States. I doubt very much they have come to any landing yet."

Another factor that could determine the location is the distance travelled by both the American and North Korean leaders:
