It reportedly used to be an opium den.

Cheng Xing Mama Shop has been in operation in Geylang for the past 70 years — until bad business forced the auntie running it to close it down late last year.

Before she officially hands over the unit (she's sold it off already), however, the space will welcome the public one last time for a flea market and an open house.

The event, happening on May 13, is organised by media company Our Grandfather Story and local community Geylang Adventures:

Here's what you can look forward to on the day itself:

  • An open house which allows to the public to explore the shophouse. It was reportedly once an opium den.
  • Pop-up flea market of auntie's leftover items, at thieves market price (i.e. going for cheap).
  • Chit-chat session with auntie, where you can learn more about what life used to be like in the mama shop.
  • Collaborations with vendors for more activities. Confirmed collaborations include one with a Guilinggao (a herbal jelly dessert) shop as well as a photo booth.

Additionally, there will be an online auction on Our Grandfather Story's Facebook page from May 3 — 7, where you can bid for relics from auntie's store. We heard there are at least 100 items to be sold.

You can reach out to them if you would like to collaborate as a vendor (on anything from F&B to art), or keep yourself updated on the event here.
