Mahathir Mohamed officially became Malaysia's prime minister on May 10, and millions tuned in to watch the swearing-in ceremony.

Anwar Ibrahim, the de facto leader of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), was among them.

In a Facebook live video by Afif Bahardin, PKR's deputy youth chief, he wrote that they were watching the swearing-in ceremony at a "secret location."

They were joined by party deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Watched ceremony from hospital

This secret location was at Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, where Anwar has been recuperating after a surgery.

During the two-and-a-half-minute live video, Anwar is seen watching the television screen intently.

He was all-smiles, and at one point, briefly turned to someone off-screen to make a comment. It is unclear what was said.

At 2min 14sec, he also appeared to wipe away tears from his eyes.

Unexpected victory by opposition

The Malaysian Pakatan Harapan opposition made history by ousting the incumbent Barisan Nasional ruling alliance at the 2018 Malaysia general election on May 9, 2018.

Having brought an end to BN's 61-year rule, it was an emotional moment for members of the opposition to witness this historic event.

And undoubtedly, ironic and strange at the same time, considering the tumultuous relationship between Anwar and Mahathir.

In a Facebook post, Afif wrote that "Permatang Pauh was a 4-0 prize for Anwar Ibrahim."

Permatang Pauh was Anwar's previous constituency in Penang.

At GE14, the seat was won by Nurul Izzah Anwar, Anwar's eldest daughter, who swept up 35,534 votes.

4-0 prize from Permatang Pauh for the nation's hero, Anwar Ibrahim. Thank God we got to meet with him for a moment previously. Thank you, people of Malaysia! #JusticeWins

He also tweeted:

Thank god that the victory of the people allowed this to happen. Azmin Ali and I got to meet with Anwar Ibrahim for a while just now in Cheras. We pray that everything will work out smoothly. #JusticeWins #FreeAnwar

Political foe turned ally

Anwar is Mahathir's political ally turned foe turned ally.

Previously, Anwar was Mahathir's deputy prime minister and finance minister, but he was sacked from his position in 1998. The UMNO supreme council also expelled him from the party Mahathir led.

Following a long trial, the 70-year-old de facto leader of the PKR was sentenced to five years’ jail on March 7, 2014.

And unless there is a royal pardon from the king, Anwar cannot run for political office for five years after his release.

According to Malaysiakini, Anwar is currently "Harapan's prime minister-in-waiting, with Mahathir expected to pave way for him to take the mantle."

In a press conference in KL on May 10, Mahathir said that "he would work on a full pardon for him from the king as soon as possible".

Mahathir also added that Anwar would have to win a by-election or be elected senator in order for him to take over as prime minister, as per their agreement.
