Udders Rum Rum Raisin ice cream can't be bought from Cheers after 10.30pm, explained

Alcohol content of ice-cream is substantial enough.

Udders Rum Rum Raisin ice cream flavour is available at selected Cheers convenience stores in Singapore.

However, it has been noticed by some that its sale is limited to between 7am to 10.30pm, just like your usual alcoholic drinks.

Of course, many Singaporeans get that you're not going to chug a tub of ice cream to get drunk, even if the ice cream boasts an impressive alcoholic content.

That's why, to some, it appears that the alcohol sale regulation on a seemingly innocuous tub of ice cream is a bit of an overkill.

Equivalent to beer?

Interestingly enough, the reasoning for the limited sale hours is probably a bit more rational than you think.

If you noticed, there's a circular label on the side that indicates the tub of ice cream contains 3.9% alcohol.

For reference, a Tiger Lime and Ginger Radler is 2%. On average, you'd see a can of Carlsberg or Tiger beer containing 5% alcohol, though some lighter beers hover around 4%.

In an interview previously, Wong Peck Lin, the co-founder of Udders, mentioned that three scoops of their Rum Rum Raisin flavour was as strong as a can of beer.

This was once again echoed in a review on TripAdvisor:

Rum Rum Raisin fits liquor definition

While no Singaporean in their right mind, would drink up ice cream by the gallon, Udders alcoholic ice cream technically fulfils the criteria set out for what constitutes as liquor in Singapore.

According to the liquor control (supply and consumption) act 2015, “liquor” means

(a) a beverage containing more than 0.5% ethanol by mass or volume;

(b) a mixture of ethanol and some other substance or liquid (including water) and containing more than 0.5% ethanol by mass or volume; or

(c) any other substance (whether or not a beverage or liquid) that is prescribed by the regulations as liquor;

Udders stores apply for liquor license

So, in this case, with each tub of Rum Rum Raisin reaching about 3.9% in alcoholic content, it pretty much surpasses the 0.5% ethanol requirement, which technically explains the rationale for its sale to be regulated just like other alcoholic drinks.

But until there is some clarification about getting tipsy on ice cream in public after 10.30pm, looks like you'll only be able to get your Udders Rum Rum Raisin fix during the allocated hours.

The Class 1A liquor license allows Udders to sell their alcoholic ice creams up to midnight at all five of their outlets across Singapore.
