50-intangible-cultural-heritage-elements-singapore-listing
Singapore has created an inventory of 50 items of intangible cultural heritage elements.
And hawker culture is one of them, besides Malay weddings and xinyao.
The list is a first step requirement by UNESCO towards a possible listing by a country and to ensure the submission is a popular one that all stakeholders agree on.
Purpose of inventory
The inventory will highlight how these intangible cultural heritage elements are practised or expressed in Singapore to show how they have evolved to suit the local context.
This will differentiate some of these elements, which can also be found in other countries.

How elements are categorised
The 50 elements are grouped into six categories.
Oral Traditions and Expressions
Social Practices, Rituals and Festive Events
Knowledge and Practices concerning Nature and Universe
These five categories are largely based on UNESCO's categories of intangible heritage.
The sixth category on food heritage is dedicated to Singapore’s food culture.
The list of elements is available at roots.sg.
More descriptions will be added progressively.
Singaporeans can contribute photographs and information of the elements, or suggest additional elements.
