S'pore might host Donald Trump & Kim Jong-un meeting

Neutral space for the meeting of strongmen.

Singapore might be called upon to host the first-ever meeting between a United States President and a Supreme Leader of North Korea.

On April 18, New York Times reported that the White House was looking at a list of possible location options for the proposed summit.

Owing to optics issues, locations in both the US and North Korea would likely be ruled out, as would the Demilitarised Zone between North and South Korea.

Because of that, US President Donald Trump is considering Singapore as an alternative.

Singapore is friendly

The Singapore government is on friendly terms with the Trump administration, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong having visited Washington DC in October 2017.

And it helps that Singapore has established diplomatic relations with both North Korea and the US.

Not new

Hosting diplomatic talks between world leaders is also not something new for Singapore.

In November 2015, China's President Xi Jinping and then-Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou selected Singapore as the site for their own historic meeting.

NYT also floated other possible options for the summit, like Vietnam, Sweden, Switzerland, and even Mongolia because of its proximity to Pyongyang.

Due to Kim's fleet of unreliable aircraft, it is thought that he might not want to fly long distances for the summit.

During his visit to China in March 2018, Kim chose to travel by train instead of plane.

Once the White House has settled on a location, the dates can be nailed down.

Right now there isn't a clear set of dates beyond "late May" or "early June".

Words, not war

Kim is currently on a charm offensive, with another historic meeting between North Korea and South Korea scheduled to take place later in April 2018.

It is expected that both sides will sign an official peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, which "ended" with an armistice (ceasefire) in 1953.

Technically, the two countries are still at war.

If Singapore is chosen for the US-DPRK summit, it would also mark both Trump and Kim's first official visit to our island.

It would be a crossover event that dwarfs even Avengers: Infinity War.
