S'pore retailer names porcelain wares after Inuka, consumers find it 'tacky', 'distasteful'

Since Inuka's passing on April 25, Singaporeans have come together to mourn for the nation's last polar bear.

However, homegrown retail brand IUIGA has gotten on the wrong side of things by naming a porcelain tea series after the celebrated icon:

According to the Facebook post, the company called it a move that is "In loving memory of Singapore's beloved polar bear", and went on to draw similarities between between the crockery and the polar bear.

These are the products in the series, which includes a twin tea set (S$29.90), teapot with lid (S$34.80), and sugar jar with lid (S$23.80):

Besides being white in colour, there is apparently no other commemorative features on the wares.

Consumers irked by marketing technique

Unfortunately, reception has been less than positive.

Singaporeans are calling the marketing "tacky" and "distasteful", and share the sentiment that it falls under shameless profiteering.

They raised the point that IUIGA is probably not donating any of its profits to an animal-related cause, despite naming their products after Inuka.
