Super umami prawn noodles by next-gen hawkers open at Killiney Road

It is touted to be the 'future of Singapore food'

A new prawn noodle place opened at 89 Killiney Road (a 10-minute walk from Somerset MRT station) only three months ago, but it is quickly gaining good reviews on Instagram.

Great recommendation today by my friend Brendon who saw it on Loh Lik Peng’s Instagram post. The shop is called Dashijia Big Prawn Noodles and they are located at Killiney Road a few doors from Teck Kee Pau. I was really impressed with the Big Prawn White Bee Hoon which is different from the usual white bee hoon. The bee hoon is first charred in a wok and then, instead of chicken stock, it is braised in a rich prawn mee stock which is also used for the prawn mee. This one really got power! It might be a tad rich, but it sure hits the spot. A few slices of pickled green chillies might help to cut trough the richness. The dried version needs a bit of tweaking as the sauce lacks oomph. The prawn mee soup is also very good. The soup is Penang style and very tasty. They use very good sea prawns here and the bowls are graded by the size of the prawns which go from Big 大 to 大大, to 大 大 大! It’s run by a young couple. Seth Sim’s dad owns Big Eater chain of Zi Char which is where he learnt his cooking skills. When he decided he wanted to make prawn mee, he went to work for a famous Prawn mee uncle in Boon Lay for a year. His wife Yvonne is a graduate who had worked in a bank for 6 years before they got married last year and they started the business soon after. To me, this is the future of Singapore food. Next gen hawkers, quality local food, nice air con environment. I hope they will just focus on maintaining quality in this one shop and not hurry to expand too quickly! Best discovery so far this year. @dashijiabigprawnmee

This place is called 大食家大大大虾面 (Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee), and as we're writing this, we can't even find it on Google Maps yet.

It has social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook, but it's largely still in its infancy.

89 Killiney Road is not yet updated with the new prawn mee business. Via Google Maps.

Umami-rich Prawn Bee Hoon

Reviews on social media praised the Da Shi Jia Big Prawn White Bee Hoon (S$16.80 nett) in particular.

The bee hoon is first charred and then braised in a prawn mee stock, producing a rich, umami-laden prawn bee hoon with a lot of wok hei and dusted with a generous helping of pork lard.

A post by @pengloh initiated my visit to this prawn noodles specialist. Opened just three months ago, this casual eatery is an offshoot of “Big Eater Seafood” (a.k.a. “大食家海鲜”) with branches in Upper Changi and Jurong West. Unlike those with a full range of offerings on their menu, the more centrally-located “大食家大大大虾面” at 89 Killiney Road focuses on prawn noodles but they do have a couple of dishes (century egg minced pork porridge is one) for those who don’t take crustaceans. After reading what Peng had to say about their soup and dry noodles, I had to order both. Shown above is the latter, the 大食家大虾炒白米粉 ($16.80 nett). Roughly translated, it means “Signature Big Prawns With White Bee Hoon”. I think it is a bit of a misnomer because the insanely tasty gravy colours the noodles an appetising reddish-brown. Completely unlike the other “white bee hoon” I have had, this boasts of “wok hei” and a gloriously umami, slightly thick sauce that has its rich flavour intensified by loads of fried pork lard and fresh “khng chye” (can someone please enlighten me on its English name?). Besides large prawns, the noodles are fried with slices of lean pork too. Although the menu is made up of only portions in one size meant for individuals, I found both our orders to be very generous. Those of you with a small appetite can share a serving and maybe add on a side dish like the Salted Egg Chicken or Shrimp Prawn Roll ($5.80 each). #veronicaphuaeats #dashijiaprawnnoodles #大食家大大大虾面 #burpproved #burpple #burpplesg #foreverhungry #whati8today #prawnnoodles #whitebeehoon #prawns #noodles #chinesefood #sgfood #igfoodie #sgfoodies #instafood_sg #sgfood #sgig #instasg #foodspottin#chinesefood #foodporn #foodie #foodlover #foodstagram #igfood #onthetable #feedfeed

According to food blogger Leslie Tay (from ieatishootipost), the rich prawn mee stock that coats the bee hoon "hits all the right spots".

Food app Burpple Brand Evangelist Veronica Phua loves the "insanely tasty" gravy that is "intensified" by lots of fried pork lard.

Fried prawn “white” bee hoon. Lard / fried onion / garlic-laden with amazing umami and wok-hei. So so so good. And lady boss Yvonne was super friendly and offered us an extra bowl of prawn soup each when she saw us slurping the soup from the other bowl. ____________________ #prawnnoodles #whitebeehoon #prawns #sgfoodporn #prawnmee #sgstreetfood #foodgasm #instafood #foodpicoftheday #foodpic #eatingfortheinsta #exploresingapore #umami #foodstagram #whati8today #hungrygowhere #burpple #singaporeinsiders #onthetable #f52grams #eeeeeats #foodinsing #feedfeed #chinesefood #foreverhungry #exploresingaporeeats #sgfood #lickyourphone #foodiegram #foodphotography

Big big big prawns

If you're not in the mood for a gigantic plate of prawn bee hoon, you might want to check out their Prawn Mee, which ranges in price according to the size of the prawns offered:

  • S$5.80 for Da Shi Jia Prawn Noodle
  • S$9.80 for Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Noodle
  • S$13.80 for Da Shi Jia Big Big Prawn Noodle
  • S$16.80 for Da Shi Jia Big Big Big Prawn Noodle

Their prawn soup is the Penang version that uses blended prawn heads and shells to produce a more robust soup base.

Young entrepreneur

According to Tay, the boss Seth Sim learnt his cooking skills his father's Big Eater Seafood zi char chain.

Sim then went on to apprentice under a prawn mee uncle at Boon Lay for one year before branching out into his own prawn mee business.

Touted by Tay to be the "future of Singapore food", you better make sure you hurry down to try it out before it becomes too packed.
