Sometimes, it just takes a simple act of kindness to make a difference in someone's life.

A sick, elderly resident at Commonwealth Crescent experienced this first-hand when a Bangladeshi cleaner offered her his lunch.

Helped elderly woman

According to a Facebook post by Tanjong Pagar Member of Parliament Melvin Yong, Kalam Mohd Abu was carrying out scheduled washing along a corridor at Block 103 Commonwealth Crescent on Saturday, Apr. 14, when an elderly resident approached him for help.

The woman, according to Yong, had no money to buy food, and was also too sick to walk downstairs as she was recovering from a recent surgery.

Kalam promptly returned to the storeroom downstairs to get the lunch he had prepared for himself and brought it to give to the woman.

He was on his way back to the woman's unit when he was stopped by some police officers from Queenstown Neighbourhood Police Centre, who found out about Kalam's good deed and took "a moment to compliment him for his selfless act".

They shared the incident on Facebook:

Presented with Certificate of Appreciation

A representative for Tanjong Pagar Town Council told Mothership.sg on Thursday that Kalam has been working at the Buona Vista division, one of the six divisions within the town council, for the past decade.

According to local website The Independent, he sends most of his monthly salary back to his parents, wife, and two-year-old daughter whom he has yet to meet :'(

Yong, who chairs the Town Council, presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation on Wednesday, Apr. 18 after learning about his kind deed.

Here's his Facebook post:
