2018 Cabinet reshuffle is a win for women, with a historic 3 female full ministers

Woohoo for women.

On Tuesday, Apr. 24, PM Lee announced his long-anticipated 2018 Cabinet reshuffle.

Three ministries will have new ministers, and two new ministers will also be appointed to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

But the most important thing for us is the fact that this reshuffle is a win for women in Singapore.

Now, there will be a total of three female full ministers in Cabinet — the most we've ever had in our history.

Who are they?

Previously a minister at the Prime Minister's Office, Josephine Teo will helm her very own portfolio: Manpower. She will also continue as Second Minister for Home Affairs.

Indranee Rajah, formerly Senior Minister of State for Law and Finance, has been promoted to full Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.

Grace Fu, who will remain as Minister for Culture, Community & Youth.

With our Cabinet dominated by men for many years in our history, there is precious little about women in our history.

The first female full minister was Lim Hwee Hua, who served as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office as well as Second Minister for Finance and Transport between 2009 and 2011. After being ousted at the polls in Aljunied GRC, though, she retired from politics.

The first female to helm her own ministry was Seet Ai Mee, who was made Acting Minister for Community Development in 1991, and only for two months — before being ousted from her single seat in Bukit Gombak in the 1991 General Election.

This was it, really, until 2015, when Fu became the first female full minister to helm her own ministry — the Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY).

And in last year's Cabinet reshuffle on May 1, 2017, Teo was appointed minister in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). She previously held portfolios in Transport, Foreign Affairs, Finance and Manpower as Second Minister at various periods.

And now, these two will be joined by Indranee, who will begin her time as Minister in the PMO on May 1. She previously served as Senior Minister of State for Law and Finance, and will at the same time be promoted to Second Minister in Finance and Education (Law too, until June 30).

Exciting times, these are.
