Tonight marks a very special occasion in our astronomical history.
To recap, we had a
- Supermoon (full moon that is nearer to Earth),
- Blue moon (second full moon in a month)
- and a Lunar eclipse (Earth is directly between the sun and the moon, and so the moon falls into Earth's shadow)
all occurring at the same time on Wednesday (Jan. 31) evening — and it was visible right here in Singapore.
The last time this occurred was 152 years ago.
While the moon wasn't blue in colour, it appeared reddish because light from the sun is filtered through the Earth’s atmosphere.
Only red light makes it to the moon and bounces back to our eyes.
As with other celestial occurrences, some of us ended up having problems proving we had witnessed the event:
