Singapore is one of the six new countries that will make their debut in the Winter Olympics Games this year in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Representing Singapore in the women's 1,500 short-track speed skating competition on Feb. 17 is 18-year-old Cheyenne Goh.

She'll be Singapore's sole representative.

Goh was also the first Singapore athlete to compete at the Intercontinental Short Track Invitational in Calgary in 2016, before becoming the first Singaporean female to compete at last year's Asian Winter Games.

She secured her qualification in Nov. 2017 in Shanghai, after which she was ranked 36th in the world.

Switched from ice hockey to speed skating

Goh moved to Canada with her family when she was 4. It was then that she took up ice skating.

She played ice hockey before making the switch to speed skating after she caught the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics on television.

According to a video interview with Channel NewsAsia, Goh said that while she wasn't as good with the shooting and puck-handling aspect of ice hockey, she enjoyed the skating part of it.

Goh does most of her training on Singapore's only Olympic-size ice rink in JCube.

According to Today, she is taking a gap year from her studies at Leduc Composite High School to train full-time.

She trains 6 times a week, 6 hours per day, which includes a 2-hour ice session that starts at 5 am, and off-the-rink training for another 4 hours, reported Channel NewsAsia.
