Guy sharing food with S'pore uncle at hawker centre sums up how S'pore should be

A great example of what Singapore can be as a society.

Most of us would have at least once or twice in our lives encountered a random uncle or auntie at a kopitiam or hawker centre, either talking to themselves or trying to strike up a conversation.

And admittedly, most of us are more likely to continue with our meals after giving cursory awkward responses — if we don't end up completely ignoring them.

Not one guy who recently moved to Singapore from Melbourne, though — according to one Catherine Leck's account, he not only acknowledged the uncle, but even offered to share food with him (summary below):

That's a pic of the uncle trying out vegetables courtesy of the guy pictured to his left in the photo.

According to Leck, the incident happened on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Old Airport Road Food Centre, in the later part of the afternoon.

"Would you like to try some of my vegetables?"

It started when the uncle sat down at the table where the good Samaritan and his fiancée, as well as Leck, were eating at.

After finishing his meal, the uncle started talking to nobody in particular.

At this, Leck notes that most people would have ignored him, or thought of him as "sot" (colloquial term for eccentric/crazy).

But the man seated next to the uncle not only acknowledged his blabbering, but also turned to him to ask:

"Would you like to try some of my vegetables?"

With gravy-stained fingers, the uncle gestured and pointed to his emptied plate.

While Leck was still trying to figure out what the uncle wanted, the man poured a large portion of the veggies onto the uncle's plate.

After he was done, he waved his hands slightly, after which the man then said, "Oh, was it too hot? I am so sorry for the chilli inside..." — even though that was no fault of his.

We've gotta admit, sometimes we can learn a thing or two from this guy's kindness and generosity.
