Namewee's S'pore concert given "Advisory 16" rating by IMDA, Namewee is confused

He is not all that pleased either.

Namewee is a Malaysian Chinese hip hop recording artist, perhaps best known for his recent collaboration with Wang Leehom on the hit song 漂向北方 ("Stranger In The North").

His upcoming show in Singapore on Feb. 3 will be the second stop in his 4896 World Tour Concert — one that he's been publicising from as early as November last year:

Unfortunately, he said he received a notice from the IMDA (Info-communications Media Development Authority) over the weekend, informing him that his concert is rated "Advisory 16" for mature content and coarse language:

And Namewee seems slightly peeved about it, if the tone and the contents of his video are anything to go by:

With this rating, fans under the age of 16 will still be allowed to attend the concert, but are warned that vulgarities might be involved.

The IMDA website explains that for "mature content", parents who "judge that their under-aged children are mature enough can choose to bring them to the performance".

This is happening at a juncture where his concert is happening in less than a month's time and according to him, almost all the tickets, which range from S$88 to S$168, are sold out.

No stranger to controversy back home

Throughout his rant, Namewee repeatedly emphasises that the IMDA is only reminding the concert-goers of their age.

"No doubt this is Singapore," he says, saying on a couple occasions that our regulations are "very strange".

But it's not just Singapore he possibly isn't a big fan of — back home, in August 2016, he was arrested and detained for four days in the state of Pahang for allegedly insulting Muslims by using the word "Allah" in a music video, parts of which were filmed in a mosque.

And as a matter of fact, he also said on Saturday he has yet to receive word from the Malaysian authorities about whether his concert can proceed on home ground.

It's for that precise reason he made a lengthy video warning fans planning to travel here for the Singapore leg of his tour about various noteworthy restrictions that exist:

Amusingly, he concludes his video with this gentle reminder:

Sassy.
