A freelance model and marketing consultant was singing karaoke with her friends when she suddenly experienced numbness and a headache.

Shortly after, she fell into a coma after being admitted to the Singapore General Hospital on Dec. 12, where she reportedly passed away three days later on Dec. 15.

She was 28.

So far, mainstream media Lianhe Zaobao and The Straits Times covered the news of her death. The woman is Karen Stella Wong.

However, Zaobao reported that the woman passed away after she sang a high note during the karaoke session.

Translation: "At that point of time she was singing a high note, and suddenly complained of a headache. A friend asked if she wanted to go to the hospital, and drove her there later." It is understood that she went into a coma after being hospitalised. Friends and family rushed to the hospital, and many posted get-well-soon messages on her Facebook wall. Sadly, Karen Stella Wong did not wake from her coma, and passed away peacefully on the 15th."

Other media, such as Business Insider Singapore, also picked up on this detail:

Father clarifies

An individual has since posted clarifications on behalf of the family of the deceased.

The father of the deceased said his daughter did not die because she sang in a high-pitched voice as reported by various media and he had only spoken to one ST reporter.

The Facebook post also clarified the events leading up to Wong's death.

Wong had a blood vessel rupture in her brain, causing a stroke, which ST reported as acute intracerebral haemorrhage, or bleeding within the skull.

She was then put on life support.

While there was an option to undergo an operation, it may have caused death or immobility, which would not have been what Wong wanted, the father said.

The parents then made the decision to take Wong off life support.

I am posting on behalf of 'Karen Stella parents, as we had just spoken.

Hi everyone,

We are Karen Stella's parents here.

We have been informed and seen some news articles, and also in some forums, speculating about our only child's death. We, as the parents, have not given any official interview to any journalists, as we are still in mourning and deep grievance.

Her Father had only just spoken to one Straits Times journalist as of time of this post, to clarify.

For those who wants to know what happened, she was out with friends, singing karaoke. She suddenly felt numbness in her body and said she felt weird and told her friend that she needed to go to the hospital. Her friend rushed her to the hospital. She called her Mother while on the way. When they reached A&E, her friend told the staff she's feeling numb. After they wheeled her in, she went into a coma. A blood vessel ruptured in her brain, causing a stroke. So after being in a coma, she's on life support since then. The doctors could not determine the actual cause.

An operation might lead to death or immobility for the rest of her life, which is what she would not have wanted. So, as painful as it is for us as her parents, we have to let her go. Some of her organs had been donated.

We thank all who came to pay respect to her, and giving us comfort and support. But we do hope, out of respect for us and all her loved ones, all speculations will stop. And whoever contacted Facebook to memoralised her Facebook account, please respect her parents. No one has the right to do that.

She's a bubbly and lovely girl, gone too soon, missed by many, but never forgotten.

Please let her rest in peace.

Thank you.

Her Father.
