On Nov. 7, 2017, a Facebook video showed a town council cleaner sweeping up pigeons in Canberra.

From the video, it appeared as though the birds were almost lifeless, but can still be seen to be flapping their wings.

Pigeons allegedly poisoned

According to Jay Shri JS, the town council cleaner had allegedly poisoned the pigeons before sweeping them away.

Apparently, the cleaner was about "to do more", but walked away as he was reprimanded by Jay's parents.

In the Facebook post, she also urged for HDB officials to do something about the culling of pigeons.

Pigeon population control

Mothership.sg reached out to Sembawang Town Council (SBTC), and they have confirmed that pigeon population control has been carried out by a licensed specialist contractor with AVA's consent in two regions -- 302 Canberra Road and 316 Sembawang Vista.

This is in response to persistent feedback from residents on their concern for health and environmental hygiene.

Pigeons fed by public, despite advisories

According to SBTC, pigeons gather in such areas due to feeding by the public. This happens despite placing advisory posters, notices and standees to remind residents to refrain from feeding pigeons.

"We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public not to feed pigeons. This will help to control the pigeon population for a clean and hygienic environment," said SBTC in a statement.
