The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) put up a post on Nov. 16 highlighting two cases of animal cruelty as a result of irresponsible pet ownership.

The post said five hedgehogs were found abandoned in a plastic tub at one HDB refuse collection.

They are now taken care by the Wildlife Reserves Singapore as ACRES does not have the housing permits for exotic mammals.

Another wounded hedgehog was found dead when the Herpetological Society of Singapore discovered it in the drain of a nature reserve.

It apparently died from being severely infected with maggot wounds.

While the owner might believe that these tiny-pokey fellows will survive well in the wild, that is far from the truth as one of the hedgehogs ended up dead.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has put up the reasons why wild animals such as hedgehogs are not allowed to be kept as pets:

May these poor hedgehogs remind Singaporeans not to buy pets, especially illegal ones, just because they are too cute to resist.

You can also help by flagging any online sale of illegal wildlife pets with a click on the “Report/ Flag Ad” on social media platforms, inform AVA or write to [email protected].
