Electric car-sharing in Singapore will kick off in December 2017.

Progressive roll out

Some 30 charging stations and 80 electric cars will be rolled out progressively by operator BlueSG.

BlueSG is a subsidiary of French conglomerate Bollore Group.

The plan is to deploy 1,000 electric cars in stages in an agreement with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Economic Development Board inked in June 2016.

A total of 500 charging stations equipped with 2,000 charging points, of which 400 will be open for public use will be put up if all goes according to plan.

Locations of charging points

The first 30 charging stations, with a total of 120 charging points, are located in a range of parking lots.

This includes 18 stations in public housing estates such as Bishan and Punggol, 10 stations in the city centre and city fringes, and two within industrial and commercial estates in one-north and Science Park.

These charging stations will adopt the Type 2 charging standard, which is a European charging interface.

This is compatible with both single-phase and three-phase power supplies,

The public is allowed to use it.

How it works

Rent the car

Visit any BlueSG charge point across Singapore and follow the easy steps below:

1. Tap your BlueSG card on the card reader of a charge point (with a BlueSG car connected).

2. Unlock the car by tapping your card on the reader located next to the driver's wing mirror.

3. Open the vehicle's power door at the back of the car, unplug the cable and return it to the charge point.

4. Close the vehicle's power door correctly, check the exterior condition of the car ans take a seat inside.

Drive and return the car

5. Turn on the engine and check the range and status of your car. If you notice a problem before driving away, inform the call centre by pushing the blue button in the car.

6. The BlueSG service is a one-way car-sharing, so you can return your car to any of our many locations. Once you’ve parked the car in your chosen space (which you can reserve in advance), simply hold your badge over the charging station, pull out the cable, and carefully follow the instructions to plug in your Bluecar.

7. The rental ends when you have plugged in the car. To lock the car doors and prevent another driver from starting it, hold your card over the windshield reader. If necessary, you can still reopen the doors to remove your belongings.
