S'porean randomly leaves handwritten calligraphy notes all around S'pore for strangers

A little act of kindness goes a long way.

As Singaporeans, we are probably used to the sight of tear-off flyers offering enrichment classes or room rentals plastered all over our void decks and bus stops.

But have you encountered one with an encouraging message personally made for you, such as these tear-off notes spotted at a bus stop outside Suntec City?

Leaving a positive impact around Singapore

The man behind these handwritten calligraphic notes is freelance designer Lee Wei Lieh.

Speaking to Mothership, Lee said he started his pet project, dubbed the #randomgiveawei (a wordplay on his name), in June 2017:

"I have been doing a lot of calligraphy writing and thought an encouraging message with real handwriting in its real, physical form will be refreshing to our very 'connected' Singaporeans."

From bus stops to void decks, he has left his beautifully-written words of appreciation for anyone to take, mostly when he's in transit.

According to Lee, a piece can take any time from a few minutes up to a few hours to finish, depending on his determination to perfect a composition.

Often, he updates his social media pages with the locations of where he has left his artwork:

As for now, Lee doesn't have a fixed schedule on #randomgiveawei — hence its name, we suppose?

But whenever he has the time or is in the midst of waiting for a friend, he starts sketching and pastes it where he feels like it when he's done.

Rewards fan support

Occasionally, people notice him working on his art — to show his gratitude, he pens a nice hand-lettered note for them too:

You do know that if you spot me at a cafe doing writing, you can always ask for handwritten special message. And I will be happy to deliver one on the spot. And what does Lee gain? Nothing, he says, but the happiness of other people's happiness:

"I'm happy for others when people acknowledge my sincere gestures. I'm more happy that I have an idea and (to be able to) execute it based on my own judgement without seeking others' approval."

If you want to check out more of his artwork or if you're on a stakeout for his next #randomgiveawei, he updates his whereabouts regularly on Instagram.
