Remember to tap in and out at the special fare gates at Bukit Panjang, Tampines and Newton.

By now, you would likely have taken the Downtown Line (DTL), Singapore's MRT network's most recent addition, which is almost certainly destined to be referred to as the "Blue Line".

The DTL officially opens as a whole, together with its new and final 16-station Downtown Line 3 extension, on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Here are the new stations that will be added, connected by dotted lines on this train map:

And here are some fun things you can do at any stations you wind up alighting at on the line:

To mark the occasion, rides on the DTL for the weekend of Oct. 21 and 22 (both days) will be free for all passengers. The Land Transport Authority announced this in a Facebook video on Tuesday afternoon:

The post accompanying the video reads:

"Enjoy free travel on the entire Downtown Line (DTL) on 21 and 22 Oct!!

Yes you heard right ;) Journeys between all 34 stations of the DTL will be free, as we celebrate the opening of DTL3 on 21 Oct!

You will still need to tap in and out of the fare gates, so don't forget your travel cards :)

Will your DTL journey still be free if you are making a train transfer? Of course! Just remember to tap out and tap back in at any fare gates at the interchange stations! As for those transferring at these 3 interchanges stations – Bukit Panjang, Newton and Tampines – simply tap back in at the special fare gates set aside for you to enjoy free travel. Easy!

Watch the video to find out more! Cheers ?"

How to travel for free

There are a few caveats, so here are the things to remember if you want to ride for free on the DTL:

  1. If you tap in and tap out at any two stations on the DTL, it's free.
  2. If you're transferring from another line to the DTL, tap out at the interchange station to enjoy free travel for the DTL leg (only).
  3. As above, if you're transferring from the DTL to another line, tap out at the interchange station for free travel for the DTL leg.
  4. BUT if you're transferring in and out of three particular stations, you've got to go through the special fare gates. These stations are Bukit Panjang, Newton and Tampines.
  5. Signs and posters will be put up and staff will direct blur people to the right fare gates so they can ride for free too.

So have fun riding up and down and round and round the DTL on Oct. 21 and 22. Bukit Panjangians and Sungei Bedokfolk can be reunited at long last — for free.
