S'pore keyboard warriors become criminal experts after watching police arrest video

Everyone is a veteran police officer now.

Once in awhile, things we see on Facebook trigger certain impressions in us.

And once in awhile (okay, probably more often than not), these impressions we get do not necessarily come from a place of reasonable contextual knowledge or experience.

Take a recent video of an arrest that took place in Bendemeer on Tuesday, Aug. 29, which ended up involving four police officers.

Struggle with police

The man, aged 50, was allegedly seen damaging potted plants, and when the first two police officers came to the scene, the man tossed paint thinner at them, leading to them both sustaining facial injuries.

The two officers were later joined by two more, and the man, who was believed to be of unsound mind, was eventually subdued and placed under arrest for voluntarily causing hurt to public servants, according to The Straits Times.

Here's the video, reposted to The Straits Times Facebook page:

But what we're here to tell you about are the comments people had in response to the video:

"Come on... our POLICE should train combat fights more... tired of looking at this kind of video in this kind of situation... Buck up guys... Anyway should give them applause for risking their life for our safe [sic] too..."

"Did I just see one of the policemen just put his gun on the curb before going after the guy? wtf"

"Singapore is making whole world laught [sic] at us like joker.. No word to say them. Eat sleep eat sleep when problem come this is what police only can do? 4 vs 1 best once of police holding gun just watching 2 joker officer try to soft play to try down 1 person. Really like cartoon."

"Why don't shoot him?"

"Kudos for the arrest. But SPF need to buck up on their arts training if need to pinned [sic] down violent subject. Should know how to pinned them down in a fast mode [sic]. Btw hwo the SPF guy locked the subject leg. Can still be seen moving."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Must the police officers shout? Shoting [sic] provokes the person. This brings him to a defensive mode! Was he causing immediate danger to a member of public? I don't see anybody else near the person. Means there is still time to talk, influence and persuade the person from being rash. Now both the officers and the person are injured. With the struggles, cant be only the officers are injured. If the person is violent in the presence of police and will harm member of public, by all means use force. Need experience [sic] ex-police officers to share expereince to young officers."

"Really joker the third one keep backing off when her colleague is struggling to pin him down ... she would have just make [sic] a swift sweep on his both legs ensure [sic] he is in prowling position. SPF please make sure your officer on duty [sic] are trained if not public really have [sic] no confidence with these poor showing."

Others counter

Thankfully, not everyone had bright ideas in terms of how the police could have done their jobs better.

Some provided some realistic perspective:

"Nobody got seriously injured and suspect is arrested. Pretty good job done here. Real life is not action movie."

"You guys think it's easy to subdue a person? Try it with someone you know who is bigger than you, see how you perform."

Some turned to sarcasm:

"Ok, we get it. The SPF should have made keyboard fighting compulsory and use social media to subdue the guy. MHA, please note and train and equip your officers with keyboards as big and loud as those used by the warriors here, ok? *facepalm*"

"Here come [sic] all the expert about how to take down a subject, why never shoot, why never use taser why this why that... wait till one day you are in their shoes, in the same situation... I want to see what you can do... just one thing, please don't call the police for help."

But this one's the clincher:

Glad there's still some hope for us.
