Pompompurin Cafe at Orchard Central will close for good on Aug. 20, 2017

Perhaps fandom is not worth that kind of money.

Pompompurin fans, we've got some bad news — the Pompompurin cafe at Orchard Central, featuring Sanrio's lovable golden retriever mascot, is closing down.

In a surprise Facebook post last Friday (Aug. 11), they announced that the well-loved character-themed cafe was closing, with their last day of operation being Sunday, Aug. 20.

This comes just a few months after the cafe's first anniversary in Singapore, having opened to much fanfare on April 18 last year.

【CLOSURE NOTICE】

Dear friends and family,

Thank you for your love and support <3 We're sad to announce that Pompompurin Cafe Singapore's last day of operation will be on 20th August 2017.

We will never forget the great friendships, beautiful memories, tears and laughter shared in the cafe.

In our final 10 days, would you join us for a final farewell? See you very soon, and till we meet again <3

Love,

Pompompurin Cafe Singapore

Mixed responses

It seems that while the cafe was lauded for being cutesy and a heaven for Pompompurin lovers, customers often lamented that the food was expensive and average in taste.

For example, their Taco Rice in a Cup of Friendship costs S$19.99, and their Coconut Milk Chicken Curry will set you back about S$17.99:

No reason was given for their closure, though some speculate that high rental costs may have had a part to play:

Despite Pompompurin Cafe's departure, Sanrio fans will still be able to visit the Gudetama cafe at Suntec City and the Hello Kitty Orchid Garden Cafe at Changi Airport.

RIP Pompompurin cafe, nonetheless.
