Police officer left with gaping wound on head trying to make arrest

He appeared to have hit his head against the seat.

One of the three police officers seen on a video trying to subdue a suspect was badly injured in the scuffle that ensued.

At the 18-second mark, one of police officers appears to have fallen backward and stayed down.

He had to be helped up by passers-by subsequently and was seen staggering while walking.

Background of incident

A 41-year-old man was seen on video resisting arrest.

He was later arrested for suspected drink-driving, drug-related offences and for injuring three police officers when he resisted arrest.

The incident happened on Friday, Aug. 4, at about 9.15am at Block 405 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

The police saw him riding a motorcycle recklessly along the pavement there. The man fled when instructed to stop.

Three officers received medical treatment at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. One of them remains hospitalised with head injuries, while another is recovering from a broken thumb.

Ampalagam Alagu has been charged with two counts of voluntarily causing hurt, and one for causing grievous hurt to police officers attempting to arrest him.

For each charge of causing hurt to a public servant lawfully discharging his duties, the suspect could face up to seven years in jail, a fine and caning, if convicted.

For causing grievous hurt to such a public servant, he could face a jail term of up to 15 years, a fine and caning.

The suspect is to be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for two weeks of psychiatric evaluation.
