On Thursday's evening peak rush hour, SMRT's North South Line is experiencing a big-time delay, with commuters reporting being turned away from the station and calls for police officers' assistance being made over station intercom.
Here's a video of the scene at City Hall MRT station, for instance:

As well as this even more fearsome-looking scene at Jurong East:
lol thanks waited for 30plus mins and then last min tell platform no service lol smrt pic.twitter.com/Ne7HbHliMw

Over at Bishan MRT station, people were stranded inside the paid section of the train platform as they were barred from crossing over from the Circle to the North South Line:
As it turns out, this is happening because of "new signalling system checks":
[NSL] Due to new signalling system checks, pls add 20mins travel time between #MarinaSouthPier & #JurongEast both bounds. We are sorry.
— SMRT Corporation (@SMRT_Singapore) June 1, 2017
And as usual, many are disputing the claim that the additional travel time is 20 minutes:
Fk la, 20 mins my ass, been waiting 30 mins between khatib and amk ?

It is not 20 mins... more like an hour

Meanwhile, SMRT says the additional travel time has been cut to 15 minutes:
[NSL]UPDATE:Trains are progressively returning to normal speed.Pls expect 15mins additional travel time btwn #MarinaSouthPier & #JurongEast.
— SMRT Corporation (@SMRT_Singapore) June 1, 2017
And that it's offering free bus services between Jurong East and Choa Chu Kang, as well as City Hall and Ang Mo Kio — even though, well, its entire line is affected:
[NSL] UPDATE: Free regular bus services are available between #JurongEast and #ChoaChuKang, also #CityHall and #AngMoKio.

But the topmost question on people's minds is:
Why would you be doing checks during peak hours? @SMRT_Singapore

We're also very keen to know, SMRT.
