Workers' Party holds annual cohesion event at a home to kickstart WP60 initiatives

It's really cohesion, because both Low and Chen were volunteering together.

The Workers' Party (WP) will be 60 this November.

And the main opposition party in Singapore wants to return to its roots of promoting a "caring society".

This is what WP MP Pritam Singh, Chairman of the WP60 committee, aims to do, as his organisers gathered the WP grassroots volunteers at the Cheshire Home on April 1.

On a Saturday morning, dozens of MPs, NCMPs, former MPs, and grassroots volunteers turned up at the home to entertain and help out the residents in their annual WP grassroots committee (WPGC) cohesion event.

WPGC comprises of volunteers assisting the WP MPs with grassroots work, to help the MPs serve the community in their constituencies.

According to the WP media spokesperson, WPGC has been organising annual cohesion events for their volunteers since 2014.

This year's annual cohesion is different though, as the last three events were internal team-building events.

The spokesperson told Mothership.sg that WP will focus on "bonding through caring" in future cohesion events, so that WP members can better appreciate that "it is always about the community and serving in our work as volunteers".

Pritam Singh: It's about service to the community

Pritam told Mothership.sg:

"We want to move away from Cohesion Day from being an internal event and socialise our volunteers to understand that volunteering with the WP is about service to the community...

What we are going to do from this year on is that Cohesion Day will be an event where we come back to the community and remind our volunteers what service is about... It is important to remind the volunteers why we are doing what we are doing under the umbrella of a political party...

What we have done for this event today, is to remind our volunteer base that it's about service to the community, I think if we can get people to realise that joining a political party is fundamentally about service to the community, service to the people...

I think if we can connect people to a larger objective of service to the country, I think we will be better off as a party".

The highlight for WP60 will be a dinner event in November, where a publication to commemorate the event will be released as well.

Low + Chen = Cohesion

And to mark the cohesion event, WP Sec-Gen Low Thia Khiang was seen standing together with his challenger MP Chen Show Mao during a volunteers' briefing.

Both appeared in high spirits, as they tossed away their party blues and wore different shades of blue at the event.
