A 97,000-tonne United States aircraft carrier with an escort of three warships were sent towards the Korean peninsula after North Korea missile tests on April 5, according to a video by CNN.

The aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson, travelled northwest with an escort of a guided-missile cruiser and two destroyers from Singapore's Changi Naval Base.

This was after the US aircraft carrier strike group's arrival in Singapore for a scheduled port visit on April 4.

However, the US has downplayed the deployment, calling it "routine". Military officials said the deployment to the Korean peninsula is a signal with limited military utility.

Prior to the Singapore visit, the Carl Vinson strike group completed two weeks of routine operations in the Asia-Pacific region, including maritime exercises with South Korea navy and Japan maritime forces. The ship also operated in the South China Sea during this deployment.

It has been at sea since January this year.

The carrier group also conducted some training with Australian forces and may also do additional training with Japanese forces as it heads further north, officials said.

During the port visit in Singapore, US sailors volunteered off-duty time at various charitable and community organisations, such as local soup kitchen, Willing Hearts, and Child @ Street 11, a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping low-income families provide education for their children.

The aircraft carrier itself carries 5,000 sailors and 60 aircraft. The escort warships is accompanied by several hundred other crew.

North Korea has since responded to the deployment by characterising it as an of aggression.

"We will make the US fully accountable for the catastrophic consequences that may be brought about by its high-handed and outrageous acts," a North Korean statement said.

The hermetic nation also said it would counter "reckless acts of aggression" with "whatever methods the US wants to take".
