Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre will be closed for three months starting Feb. 20 for renovations.

According to the National Environment Agency, the renovation works will end on May 19.

Shin Min Daily News said in a report on Feb. 17 that three to four older stallholders have decided to retire as a result of this hiatus.

Some stall owners told the Chinese newspaper that monthly rental at the market and food centre is between S$500 and S$1,500. They have not heard word of any increase.

The current building was last renovated 11 years ago.

History of market

The original Tiong Bahru market was converted from shophouses in 1945.

In 1950, a proper market was constructed and was known as Seng Poh Market.

Seng Poh Market officially opened on Jan. 21, 1951, and was touted by the Municipal Commission then as the most up-to-date market in Singapore for having white mosaic flooring.

In 2004, it was shut down for a complete rebuild over a two-year period. Stallholders were relocated to a temporary market at Kim Pong Road.

In 2006, it reopened as a two-storey building and was renamed Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre.

The new building was constructed at a cost of S$16.8 million then.

The Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre’s ground floor consisted of over 250 wet market and retail stalls.

The second level was the hawker food centre where there were over 1,400 seats and 83 food units laid out in an open triangular shape.
