Terrexes depart Hong Kong for home, could be back as soon as Feb 3

And they're off!

And the good news keeps coming.

On the eve of Chinese New Year (Jan 27), Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen posted on Facebook (Jan 27):

"Our Terrexes left Hong Kong port this morning at 0415hrs. Next stop, home".

This means our nine terrexes will be back in Singapore very soon.

In a media doorstop interview on Wednesday (Jan 25), Ng said that it would take shipping carrier APL a week to transport them.

Ng added that APL would make special efforts during the CNY weekend to transport the terrexes directly from Hong Kong back to Singapore, without any intermediate stops.

Resolution after two months

The nine Terrexes were seized by Hong Kong's custom authorities on November 23, 2016.

They were on their way back to Singapore from Taiwan, following a military training exercise.

Back by Feb 3?

Ng had earlier said that he hoped that "the terrexes can leave Hong Kong soon and arrive back in Singapore to celebrate reunion for Chap Goh Mei".

Chap Goh Mei, in the Hokkien dialect, refers to the 15th night of Chinese New Year, or Feb 11 this year.

If it takes a week for the nine terrexes to travel from Hong Kong to Singapore, they will likely arrive on our shores by Feb 3.

This means that they can celebrate a different CNY tradition here, known as Ren ri (人日).

Ren ri is the seventh day of the lunar calendar -- also known as "Everybody’s Birthday".
