Still unclear if there will be free replacements.

Spring Singapore has announced that four glass gas cooker hobs from Electrolux could potentially explode. The models EGT9637CKP, EGT7637EGP, EGT7637CKP and EGT7627CKP were sold between 2014 and 2016.

Spring has urged people who have purchased the cooker hobs to stop using them immediately. The agency said it "has received reports of glass shattering and small explosions when the affected glass gas cooker hobs were in use and is currently investigating the matter."

SPRING said that in one case, a user was scalded as a result.

Electrolux Singapore put out a statement to say that it has "worked closely" with Spring on this matter since April 2016.

It added that each of the models "had been registered and approved in accordance with local laws and regulations, prior to being sold in Singapore."

Electrolux also added that people who have purchased the affected models that run on town gas should contact Electrolux by email ([email protected]) or phone (6727 3614 or 6727 3699).

It added that no other models were affected.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause," Electrolux said.

Unhappiness from users

With the release of this news, netizens have expressed concern and unhappiness over the handling of this incident.

Some wondered why an announcement was not made sooner if Electrolux said it was working with authorities since April 2016:

Mothership.sg has reached out to the netizen claiming to have been scalded as a result of the cooker hob explosion for his comments. We will update this article when he responds.

*Update: Mr Sam San has responded to Mothership.sg sharing that he bought the EGT9637CKP model in August 2015. According to him, the hob was problematic with "small explosions" since the beginning and subsequently had problems with the ignition. He said that Electrolux had sent people to fix the hob but "soon after" the repair an explosion occurred while he was using a pressure cooker on the hob causing the cooker to "jump up". Hot steam that escaped from the displaced pressure cooker lid scalded his left arm.

Mr San shared that when he next approached Electrolux via email, he was told his hob was no longer under warranty and he said Electrolux told him that it would cost $400 for replacement parts to repair the hob. When he asked why the problems with the hob continued after the first repair, he said the Electrolux customer service officer did not offer any answers.

According to Mr San, he reported this incident to Spring Singapore in September. He has declined to pay $400 for replacement parts and the hob remains unused in his home. He said Electrolux has not contacted him since offering to repair his hob for $400.
