Mercedes driver now faces culpable homicide charge for causing driver's death on AYE

The penalty for culpable homicide not amounting to murder is a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine and caning.

The 53-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver who allegedly caused the death of another driver by driving against the flow of traffic along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) now faces an amended charge of culpable homicide on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Businessman Lim Chai Heng, 53, was initially charged with reckless driving.

Lim is accused of driving his silver Mercedes against the flow of traffic along the AYE and hitting the car of media personality Liong Kuo Hua, 37 on Dec. 19 last year. Liong died on the spot.

Liong’s wife and a couple on a motorcycle were also injured.

The penalty for culpable homicide not amounting to murder is a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine and caning.

Lim has been remanded for psychiatric evaluation.

The case will be mentioned again on Jan. 24.
