15-20 mins extra travel time on East-West Line, says SMRT. Commuters completely disagree.

SMRT, why you like that?

This shouldn't really be news to us, but on Thursday morning (Jan. 19), a track fault on the East-West Line led to extended delays in travel time from Joo Koon to Clementi MRT stations.

Initially, SMRT said an additional 10 minutes’ travel time was required between the affected stretch.

Then, about 15 minutes later, they upped this to 15 minutes.

Later on, at roughly 20-minute intervals, SMRT said the additional travel time required was 20 minutes.

The fault was cleared by 9:27am, and normal service resumed at 9:50am, they said.

These updates would have been a great help to us commuters, had they actually been accurate.

I personally boarded the train from Boon Lay at around 8.15am. By around 9.00am, however, the train had not even arrived at Jurong East.

(for those of you who aren't Westies, that's three stops — Lakeside, Chinese Gardens, Jurong East. 45 minutes for three stops.)

My journey from Boon Lay to Orchard took about 50 minutes to an hour longer than my usual commute. That's almost two hours' travel time total.

But don't take it from me. Here's what other commuters said in response to SMRT's lies updates:

But hey, didn't the MRT's reliability increase by 30 per cent from last year?
